Rocketing Girls Into Robotics

FREE program launching Illawarra girls into STEM!

Since 2011, Project Bucephalus has run workshops designed to encourage children’s interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). With funding from the Commonwealth Department of Industry and Innovation and FIRST Equity and Access and a partnership with the Rotary Club of Corrimal, these workshops just got bigger!

The RGIR workshops will bring girls together to explore robotics in lessons run by the experienced female mentors from the Project Bucephalus FIRST robotics teams. During RGIR, girls will attend weekly lessons, featuring lessons and games designed to develop robotics, engineering and programming skills. It will cater to all skill levels and all equipment will be supplied.

The program is open to female students in the Illawarra aged 9 – 16. There are limited spaces available. Ideally, students should seek to be nominated by their school (Contact Us to send information to a school). However, we will accept individual applications.

The 2021 RGIR program will run in Term 1 (7 weeks) and Term 2 (9 weeks). There are now two ways to take part:

#1: Sponsored Participation:

RGIR is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Industry and Innovation and the FIRST Equity and Access grant. Eligible students should make an application, and if successful, can attend classes for free. If a student is not accepted for a particular round, their name will be automatically included in the applications for the next.

Note: 2021 funding criteria gives priority to students from Indigenous, Refugee, or Low-SES backgrounds.

#2: Paid Participation:

RGIR funding doesn’t always cover all interested students. Those wishing to participate in an all-girls class are welcome to pay our normal class costs. Students in this category should make an application and select the “Paying Student” option.
